With years of experience under her belt, Milkdonna has made a significant impact in the music and fashion scene. Her talent has taken her to international stages in Ibiza and Lisbon, where she has shared the stage with renowned artists like Dixon and Solomun. Firstly, what’s the story behind your name, Milkdonna?
Hi Dusted Nation, thanks for having me! The story behind my name is just my last name which is milk in Portuguese combined with two icons that I love (Donna Summer and Madonna)
How has growing up and living in Sao Paulo influenced your sound and style?
Brazil’s history of cultural resistance dates back beyond the past century and that was very strong within the music and lyrics when I was a kid, because of the Ditadura Brazil has lived until the 80s so as a kid I remember listening to a lot of Brazilian pop/rock, mpb, samba with my parents, but also São Paulo is a very cosmopolitan city so I grew up listening to a very big range of music genres and styles, I was always fascinated by all the pop divas such as Donna summer, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Tina turner, Diana Ross so I grew up listening to a lot of disco, funky and pop music as well.
How would you describe the Sao Paulo underground music scene to someone who’s never experienced it?
The underground music scene in São Paulo has a big space in the city, it’ve grown rapidly for the last past years with parties that prioritise freedom of expression, they make it clear that you can and should be whoever you want to be. This has been crucial in opening doors for people to express themselves through performance, fashion and lifestyle across marginalised communities.
Which specific elements of Sao Paulo culture do you often draw inspiration from in your music?
When I started Djing I used dress up and perform like Lady Gaga in gay clubs so it was always linked with the queer community, I have a lot of inspiration from that, not just music but also how I express my self.
Could you share a memorable moment from your journey as a music producer in Sao Paulo?
I think one of my most memorable moment was when this guy saw me playing and invited me to Dj at a 3 days festival in Lisbon where I got the chance to open for Solomun and Dixon. He didn’t have instagram or any medias, he booked just because he enjoyed my music, I felt so thrilled because we live in a world where besides what you do, your social media is more important than that. Was very old fashioned, loved it.
What artists or experiences have influenced the fusion of genres in your music?
As I said before, all the pop divas mixed with my Lady Gaga cover period mixed with my house music passion has given me what I think I can call my ‘’fusioness’’.
Can you tell us about how your personal fashion style intersects with your musical identity?
Well I think music has everything to do with how you express and that is part of what we call fashion. They were made for each other. When I DJ the way I dress up my self is connect with how I want to express my self in that moment.
Can you give us some insight into the creative process behind your latest track, “Erotica”, any inspirations or influences?
I wanted the track to be sensual, sexy, naughty but at the same time elegant and fearless. I could say Miss Kittin is a very big influence at my work but for this track I’d say Madonna.
How does ‘Erotica’ differ to your previous works?
Is more authentic and personal, it has my voice, has my style and energy in it, the previous work I had I was just random beats and styles, more like a testing phase.
What can fans expect from Milkdonna in the near future? Any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon that you can tell us about?
More and more music! It is just the beginning lol. About collaborations, I working with some very good producers in Brazil on a project in what I’d say ‘’tropical disco’’ tracks.
