Zuzu Silk finds her frequency on “Slow Down” and a new chapter with Noir Fever [Interview]

For Zuzu Silk, moving into dance music has felt less like a reinvention than a homecoming.

After emerging through Noir Fever’s first writing camp and becoming the label’s first publishing signing, the singer and songwriter is stepping further into that world with “Slow Down,” her new collaboration with Selena Faider and California electronic duo Bali.

“I love to dance. I love feeling so moved by music that I HAVE to dance. That’s where I feel the most me. Making more intimate/ sultry music was I think god’s way of getting me used to writing from my soul, but it didn’t resonate the same way dance music does. It feels very tribal and a part of my purpose to be around. Once I made the switch from RnB / Soul I felt like I had come home. Writing deep metaphors doesn’t have to stop because the people are having a good time, I think making the songs still have deep meaning while keeping the focus on the groove is a very exciting challenge I’m pumped to keep working with.”

Her development through Noir Fever has included close mentorship from its founder, Aluna, who encouraged Zuzu to embrace the understated quality of her voice rather than the power traditionally emphasized during her musical theater training.

“I can’t speak for her directly but something I’ve really loved playing with is the calmness in my voice when I’m singing. I came from musical theater and was taught if you’re a singer you have to sang and belt and give ENERGY ENERGY ENERGY in your vocals. But focusing on refining the more relaxed sound, especially in this type of music, is something Aluna keeps reminding me is a super power and I definitely feel more and more that that’s true. I think it’s so rewarding in any kind of artist development when a program you’ve had about yourself can break and you can really see what’s possible.”

“Slow Down” began during an informal session with Bali at Aluna’s home studio before the duo shared the track with Selena Faider.

“Me and Bali originally made that song in Aluna’s home studio, just messing around. Bali had a connection with Selena and shared the track with her and she put her spin on it, and it sounded amazing. The rest is history!”

Balancing a warm house groove with Zuzu’s silky vocals, the song captures the rush of following a romance at full speed, even when others advise caution.

“Im a lover girl, when I like something I like to go full speed towards it. Sometimes people tell you to slow down but it feels so good to just free myself up to go as fast and as deep as I want to.”

That sense of freedom sits at the center of Zuzu’s emerging dance project. Tuned to 432 Hz rather than the standard 440 Hz, “Slow Down” is intended to be felt physically as much as heard, pairing its abandon with an underlying sense of balance.

“It’s very appealing to me to live life without restrictions. It’s taken me a while to know that it’s okay to love fast and even to get hurt, it’s how you learn and grow. You do always survive and the memories of the romance are so worth it. The song is in 432hz instead of the normal 440hz, which isn’t something we hear with the ear but more so with the body, and so it’s meant to feel equalizing to listen to. To me that also symbolizes that you can remain centered while living a wild life. Balance.

Also if anyone wants to know I was born in an earth spaceship in 7079 and came back to use groove to rebalance some frequencies. This is the first in the lineup of songs meant to implement the changes. Enjoy it!!”
